Alts Unbarred: Expanded Interest, Access Driving Sector Boom

The market for alternative investments is experiencing an unprecedented boom and is projected to expand further as barriers to access come down and trust in the 60/40 rule contracts.

Alternative assets such as real estate and private equity — once considered the exclusive purview of institutions and the extremely well-heeled — are projected to grow from $11.8 trillion in 2021 to $17.2 trillion in 2025, according to Prequin.

This outlook is the natural result of more and financially diverse accredited investors entering the space, and modernization that now makes investing in “manageable bite-sizes” of alts possible, Richard Hillson of Hillson Consulting says.

“People are getting smarter to [the view] that we can’t just have everything tied to follow the equity markets. The 60/40 [growth-and-income] model is fundamentally broken, and we need to change that,” he adds.

Investors and their advisors are increasingly of the view that allocating to alternative investments can bring balance to portfolio construction amid change.
